Well Groomed
Along with the aesthetic benefits of grooming your pet (a clean, beautiful coat and minimized pet odor), good grooming practices will help keep your pet healthy and happy. Here’s why:
Even if you get your pet professionally groomed, it’s still a good idea to at least brush your pet yourself on a regular basis. This affords you a wonderful opportunity to bond with your pet as well as check for skin problems, such as lesions, lumps, hair loss and parasites.
Ensuring your pet’s skin is healthy is a significant step in ensuring your pet’s overall health. The skin is the largest organ of the body, and is responsible for acting as a protective barrier from injury and disease. The skin also guards against exposure to the elements, helps to regulate body temperature and prevents dehydration.
Certain diseases such as thyroid disease, allergies, infections and certain systemic illnesses can compromise the skin’s protective qualities. In these cases, work with your veterinarian to provide your pet with medicated baths that work in conjunction with any medications your pet may be taking.
Did You Know: At both of our Montclair and Verona locations we offer grooming services such as bathing, medicated baths, nail clipping and anal gland expressions. If you’re bathing your pet yourself, be sure to only use shampoos made for pets – not humans. Human shampoos can contain detergents and fragrances that are irritating or possibly harmful to your pet.
